Barley Treatments

It has been a European Tradition for many centuries to prevent algae growth in their stock ponds by floating a bale of barley straw.  As the barley decomposes it gives off various natural chemicals that keep the algae from growing as effectively.  Used mostly as a preventative, rather that to kill existing algae blooms, the use of barley in a decorative water feature can also be extremely effective.

Remember that the barley bales, flakes, or pellets work best when they are exposed to some air, which aids in the decomposition process and that water circlulation is necessary to spread the helpful chemicals throughout the pond.  If you don't like the looks of floating those barley products in your water feature then consider using barley extract for a more immediate and scientific application.
